Alphabet Activity

This is a video I filmed one morning in the Brown Bear room. It began with a child telling me that he had nothing to do. I handed the child sandpaper letters and asked if he could put the letters in sequential order. A few children showed interest so the alphabet was divided between four children and they took turns placing their letters in the correct place. Slowly more children became interested and joined the activity. I originally began taking photos of the activity but realized that although photos are great, it could not completely capture the language, the cooperation, the inventiveness, excitement and enjoyment for literacy, and the creativity of the children.

Throughout the activity, I did not prompt the children in any way, nor did I speak to them. What you see is all them. The idea of using the alphabet puzzle as a tool to figuring out the order of the alphabet came from the children. The children picked their own roles in the activity; some children placing the cards down and others reviewing the order and then telling the group what was next. It was not until the end of the activity that I assisted them in correcting the alphabet.

We understand that parents are not able to completely understand what occurs in our classrooms. We hope that this little 13 minute video is a glimpse into the world of your children.

Thank you.

Winter Build

Many thanks to the 17 parents and youngsters who flew through the list! What got accomplished?

playground shade (which will become more shady with a vine or two)
lights mounted to improve hallway visibility in evenings
cubby earthquake secured
improve log cabin visibility
nourish raised planter beds with worm composting
cull yucky plastic toys
organize shed
scrub, scrub, scrub

Is there anything Home Sweet Home cannot do?! In gratitude to the great minds behind the designs and the hard working early risers.

Our next Build is in April and will be our GREEN DAY - dedicated to caring for our gardens.

Joy Through Music Videos

[AdamC pinch-hitting here...]

At long last, here are some videos of the Joy Through Music performance, taken from the camcorder:

You can skip forward or back using the arrows that appear in the lower-right corner of the window.

Sorry that the tape ran out right after Kris & Katy's puppet show; and that the camcorder got creative in its focusing for a while.

Also, Kim put some pictures and a few shorter videos here (password: "homesweethome"):

Rock on, kiddos.

Child Behavior with an Adult Lens

Excerpt from the Simon Rich piece in The New Yorker called "Play Nice: If adults were subjected to the same indignities as children…"

Lou Rosenblatt: Can I drive your car? I’ll give it back when I’m done.
Mrs. Herson: I’m sorry, do I know you?
Lou Rosenblatt: No, but we’re the same age and we use the same garage.
Mrs. Herson: No offense, sir, but I really don’t feel comfortable lending you my car. I mean, it’s by far my most important possession.
Brian Herson: Mom, I’m surprised at you! What did we learn about sharing?
Mrs. Herson: You’re right . . . I’m sorry. Take my Mercedes.

Parents and teachers have a difficult row to hoe. In addition to the ethical responsibilities we heap upon kids (to share, to care, to problemsolve with words) is the concern and disapproval adults express when children enjoy play behaviors that seem opposed to our values. This includes power play. This includes pretend guns (and other weaponry).

This is especially difficult when national and world events have served to create more anxiety in adults (and children). How can we keep children safe in a violent culture? Does violent play lead to violent acts or does power play allow children the room to work out their curiosity and ideas about weapons and death in a safe environment? How do parents and teachers work this out with children and each other?

We must agree to persist in discussion with compassion. We must respond not react. We must commit to looking at children through their lens, with love and trust, and in the spirit of support.

Parent's Night Out - Valentine's Day!

Spectacular New Year

What an amazing beginning to 2011! Home Sweet Home has greatly benefitted from the strong involvement of parents and Big Friends to enhance our learning community. It is impossible to represent all the success stories, but here are some highlights!

PAC Committees
Build: sandbox; interior fix and clean-up
Dad's Group: tiki fellowship; Bear Hike
Events: Harvest Festival; Joy Through Music
Fundraising: targeted spending; Laptop Lunch campaign; parent donations campaign
Garden: worm compost; garden clean-up
Music: Joy Through Music; Cowboy Jared visits; instrument of the month

Thank you to all our families for your tremendous support.

Our next BUILD is the last Saturday of this month! The PAC Build and Fundraising Committees are collaborating to facilitate the playground shade structure. To tie this in to the Green principles, Home Sweet Home would like to consider an arbor design anchored by large casks and have it be covered with vines. We need designers, carpenters, and can-do people to make it happen! Billy Davidson (Cash's dad) is our Build Committee chair.

Big Friend updates:
HSH will welcome eight additional Life Academy interns next week! These Big Friends will be on site Mondays and Wednesdays afternoons.

West Alameda Community Programs will offer YOUTH ACT, a performing arts group that will craft work for the Early Childhood audience. Youth Act will perform at the NAEYC Week of the Young Child festivities. Artensia will serve as the Adult Coach and Keith will serve as the Youth Coach.

Please support BASE at the next AUSD Board Meetings (flyer in mailbox). Any adult that comes out to represent gets a free t-shirt from an appreciative youth volunteer!
