Alternatives in Action is a youth development organization committed to social justice. It is our privilege to engage the community in ongoing dialogue respecting the rights of others. Nowhere is this more critical than identifying the needs of the voiceless, specifically children, and especially with regard to Education. Parents often ask, but what can I do? Frankly, a lot. Policy is made by effecting change through action. Home Sweet Home invites parents to voice and vote their appreciation for Early Childhood Care and Education.

We are Reggio Children
As adults continue to engage in deep conversations to continuously create a dynamic learning community it becomes increasingly clear that the need "to know" is not simply the provenance of young children. Adults are voracious for knowledge, too - what may appear to be the act of simple information gathering is a deeper need to be satiated with knowing. The root of this need is our innate desire to trust. As we assess our experiences, we develop capacity for trust: to trust ourselves, our partners, our relationships, and our unique learning community. While trust must be earned to be kept, the initial assumption of respect and an offering of trust is an excellent foundation for high performing learning communities.
Infant's trust that a cry will elicit touch. Children learning to walk, stumble, but they pick themselves up and soon learn to run. They trust the ground to be solid even when it's rocky. Their trust is well placed. Adults must learn wariness; it is an adult function of becoming "practical and responsible", but it can actually be limiting and even disabling when it leads us, instead of checks us. When we invite ourselves in to a child-state we become open to seeing the possible. This openness may open the capacity of another. This can catch like wildfire and create dynamic capacity for a learning community. Children model this for us when a "theme" overtakes the collective group and frames their play and activities: explorations become rich, actions become daring, reflection becomes deep.
Parents and teachers are invited to enter this state together. We are lifelong learners, risk takers, capable of dreams, capable of delivering a great vision. We are Reggio Children, too.
